Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church: that God will help us take up the yoke of Christ and follow him in speaking the truth lovingly, offering forgiveness to those who wrong us and praying for our enemies

For the grace to be childlike: that we may learn dependence upon God and surrender our attempts to control our lives through our knowledge, power or possessions

For wisdom: that we may recognize God’s action in our lives each new day and trust that God is making all things work for our good

For a reverence for the Sabbath: that God will show us how to disengage from our busyness and technology so that our minds and spirits can be refreshed

For a fuller life in the Spirit: that God will free us from sin and selfishness so that the Spirit who lives within us may lead us toward wholeness and a virtuous life

For all who are weary in body, mind or spirit:  that the Spirit will restore strength to the physically exhausted, hope to those who are emotionally worn out and energy to all who have exhausted through loving service of others

For all who are burdened by life, for the sick and those who care for them; for those who struggle to feed their families; and for those recovering from floods, tornadoes, and wildfires: that they may find rest in Christ, renewal of their spirits, and the assistance which they need

For all who struggle with sleep or renewing rest: that God will free them from worry, help them to trust in God’s providence, and renew them restful sleep

For all who do not believe in God: that the Spirit will lead them into an encounter with the living God and help them enter into a relationship with the One who loves them

For members of Congress: that God will give them wisdom and help them to be mindful of the little ones as they develop healthcare policies

For a greater stewardship of earth’s resources: that God will guide us in using and sharing the fruits of the earth

For the poor, the marginalized and refugees: that God will open new opportunities for them, renew their strength and touch our hearts to be more compassionate and generous

For all who are traveling: that God will guide them safely to their destinations and protect them from all harm

For an end to discrimination and illegal drug sales: that God will change hearts and minds of those who are entrapped and help religious and community leaders to offer support for all who desire to change

For the gift of peace: that God will transform the human hearts that are filled with angers and jealousies, and defuse their attraction to violence
