Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church, that we may be a source of living water for all who thirst for meaning and purpose in their lives

For the grace of courage: that our encounters with Christ may strengthen us, free us from  our fear and embolden us to share the joy we have found in knowing Christ

For a greater openness to the Word of God: that we may take God’s Word to heart; ponder it; and draw life from it

For a deepening of hope: that the Spirit of God will lead us into a deeper experience of the length and breadth of God‘s love and renew within us the dynamism of discipleship

For the grace to seek authentic fulfillment: that we may not be seduced by superficial satisfactions but seek the One who can fulfill our deepest longings

For the courage to recognize and admit our sinfulness: that like the woman at the well, we may honestly face our life and ask for help in changing our direction

For all who face prejudice and discrimination: that God will heal their wounds and help them to continue to share their gifts for the good of society

For all who thirst every day, particularly those in areas of drought, refugees, and those displaced by violence and warfare: that God will assist them, provide access to water for them, and help our hearts to be more sensitive to their suffering

For all the Elect: that they may grow in their desire for waters of new birth and allow God more fully into their hearts this Lent

For all in irregular marriage situations: that they may know that God loves them and that his mercy seeks to bring them to wholeness

For greater recognition of the ministry of women:  that we may be open to and encouraging of the ministerial gifts of women who bring the Good News to our communities and to those who never come to Church

For the grace of conversion: that we may be open to a change of heart and to putting God first in our lives

For a deepening of prayer in our lives: that we may find ways to make room for God and spend time in prayer and reflection during these coming weeks

For all who are persecuted for their faith: that God will protect them from harm and make fruitful their witness to the Gospel

For all who lack clean drinkable water: that God will raise our awareness of the importance of clean water and strengthen all who are working to provide it for the good of all humanity

For legislatures and city councils as they prepare budgets for the coming year: that they may
make wise choices and develop policies that will promote the greatest good

For an end to bloodshed in areas of conflict, particularly Syria: that God will lead human hearts away from killing and violence into paths of peace and dialogue
