Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church: that we may live in the confident assurance of God’s abiding concern and providential care for us

For the grace of freedom: that God will free our hearts from fear and anxiety so that we may respond with love and concern in whatever God asks of us

For a spirit of reverence: that our goals for life may be based on the awareness that all life is a gift from God and should lead us toward an ever-deepening relationship with God

For the gift of courage: that we may confidently bear witness to our values and principles even in times of opposition and resistance from the culture around us

For confidence to speak the truth: that we may speak the truth that the Spirit has planted deep in our hearts even when rejection and ridicule may be returned to us

For all fathers and those who have shown us a father’s love: that God will grant them good health, guide them in being good examples, and help them to be a source of encouragement to their children

For all who are afraid of death: that God free their hearts from fear, help them to experience God’s unconditional love for them, and give them a deep confidence that God will wipe away every tear and give them fullness of life

For all who have experienced or who live under the threat of violence, whether from neighborhood turmoil, organized crime, terrorism, or armed conflict: that they will know God’s strengthening presence and redeeming love

For all who have been wounded by gossip: that their reputations may be restored and their spirits healed

For all who are struggling financially: that God will calm their hearts, guide them to the resources they need, and open the hearts of many to accompany them

For God’s creation: that God will guide us in protecting the air, land, and water that we share so that all may benefit from God’s gifts

For all who are researching treatments and vaccines for dangerous illnesses:
that God will guide and inspire their work so that life can be preserved

For all elected leaders: that God will give them insight into the effects of their decisions and help them to make choices that will bring about the greatest good for society

For wisdom and insight: that God will guide the development of new policies for restructuring law enforcement and assist all officers to fulfill their duties faithfully

For a listening spirit: that protestors, civic leaders, co-workers, neighbors, and family members may listen more intently and understand more fully the pains, values, and goals of one another
