Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church: that we may hear God’s call to discipleship and seek first the reign of God in our lives

For the grace of freedom: that we may know freedom of mind and heart so that we can serve those in need around us and not be controlled by the expectations and demands of society

For all who are striving to hear the call to discipleship, particularly inquirers and searchers for the truth: that God’s Word may touch their hearts and guide them into a deeper knowledge of God

For Christian communities that are experiencing oppression and persecution, particularly in Syria and Iraq: that God will strengthen them, renew their hope, and give them courage

For all who feel impelled to violence: that the Spirit of God will calm their anger and help them recognize each person as a child of God

For all who have experienced violence: that Spirit of God will help them pray for their persecutors and continue to show compassion

For all who are making life decisions: that they may be aware of God’s invitations planted deep within their hearts and courageously choose paths that lead to life and holiness

For all who are making a journey, particularly pilgrims, refugees, and those going on service trips: that God will guide and protect them on their journey and lead them to new discoveries about themselves and God’s love for them

For the grace of unity: that all Christians may find healing for past wounds and new hope through the Spirit of God to work together for God’s glory

For Pope Francis: that God will renew and strengthen him in calling the church to greater service, love and unity

For all who will benefit from the Peter’s Pence Collection: that all who suffer from famine, disasters and hardship may experience support through our love and concern

For all who are called to bear prophetic witness: that their witness to the truth may touch hearts and be an opportunity for deeper conversion for all God’s people

For the members of Congress: that the Spirit will guide them in addressing the issues of violence, injustice and poverty so that all may live in peace and safety

For the gift of healing: that families divided by faith and different understanding of the Scriptures may recognize the God who is at work in every heart and experience renewal of their relationships

For an increase in civility in public discourse: that all who are championing causes may respect those who hold different ideas

For nuclear disarmament: that nations will turn from fears and threats and use their resources to promote justice and reconciliation

For peace throughout the world: that conflicts and jealousies may end and that all nations may use their resources to defeat disease and hunger

For all who have been wounded in shootings, particularly the people in Orlando:
that God will heal their wounds, renew their spirits, and give them hope

For all who are grieving losses following the violence in Orlando: that God will give them consolation and peace

For all who died in the shootings in Orlando:  that God will welcome them into the joy and peace of heaven
