THE GOSPEL

Luke 9:51-62

Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests.

Jesus, when you say, “follow me,”
you ask so much from us.
You are asking us for
everything.

Please deepen our trust.

Let us
pack our bags lightly.
Then go to where you call us.
Loosen our countless attachments,
and whatever fastens us
to our safe
 spots.

We want
no fright when you are near.
Let us lay our heads
 where you lay
 yours.

THE FIRST READING

1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21

Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

Elisha
left the fields
to follow the prophet.

James
 and John
let go of their nets
in order to follow Jesus.

Lord, when you call us,
in our daily lives,
help us leave
plowing &
fishing

and come
follow
you.

THE SECOND READING

Galatians 5:1, 13-18

The whole law is fulfilled on one statement, namely,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Christ,
help us
look over the
protective walls
in which we enclose
our sorry, beloved selves.

Let us climb over our walls,
to find our neighbors
in need and

love them as we love ourselves.
This is our freedom.
This is our
joy.
