Lord, be our light
.

(Introductory Prayers)

THE GOSPEL
Matthew 13:44-52

Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field.”

Lord,

What
is the pearl
of great price?

A Mercedes?
Portfolios, oil wells?
Honor and praise and awards?
Kingship over everything we survey?

Or could it be

neighbor serving neighbor?
Dinner with friends?
A kind word?

An
opening
to your love?

Give us your wisdom
to know your true treasure.

THE FIRST READING
1 Kings 3:5, 7-12

“Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart.”

When we wonder
what is wrong with our neighbor,
Lord, give us an understanding heart.

If we have to choose between the
“pearl of great price”
 and the new
Lexus,

Lord,

show us the wealth of an
understanding
heart.

THE SECOND READING

Romans 8:28-30

All things work for good for those who love God.

Holy Spirit,
within us dwelling,

be our
 aid.

Take our paltry prayers.
gentle them, weave them into yours.

When
the Father
searches our hearts

let him find your infinite acts of love
 intertwined with our
small ones.

Amen
