THE GOSPEL
Matthew 14:22-23Meanwhile the boat … was being tossed about by the waves,
for the wind was against it. … He said, “come.”
Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water
toward Jesus.
Lord,
we see you
walking on our sea,
dealing with an out of control
environmental crisis, racial injustice
and wars.
You
call us to
come to you.
Let us
keep our eyes on you; never take
them off.
We know you will be right with us,
calming our rampant seas.
If, when we are terrified and
we falter and start to sink,
please
—as you did with Peter—
stretch out your
hand to us
too.
THE FIRST READING
1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a
After the fire there was a still, small voice.
Lord
you are almighty,
too much for our eyes to see.
We find your shadow in the sunrise,
or in the workings of justice,
or your whispering in a
child’s laugh,
or a Bach
fugue.
You are present in family, near and far;
in good friends; in a Van Gogh;
the beauty of wheat fields
or in wild geese
winging
away.
Oh, thank you for
your gifts,
Lord.
THE SECOND READING
Romans 9:1-5
I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart.
Father,
let
none of us
ever be cut off from
Christ!
We
thank you,
and praise you for
the adoption, the glory,
the law, the worship,
the promises, the
covenants
you have
given
to
the
world
through
your
people,
the Israelites.
We
thank you
and praise you
for the gift of your
Spirit to all your people.
