THE GOSPEL

Mark 1:1-8

People of the whole Judean countryside
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him
and were being baptized by him. …

They came in droves to hear John.
 Now, people everywhere,
ache
in holy hunger
and
 wait
  for you.

They are the
wilderness, crying out.
They are the desert, parched.
They are the wasteland,
the crooked roads,
the rugged
land.

Come, be
smooth paths,
gentle rain, teeming
harvests.

Come to us, Lord Jesus
and feed us with your kindness.

Make us a
channel of your
peace.

THE FIRST READING

Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11

Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.

 O Lord, you comforted us
 as you had pledged.

You came to us like a shepherd
who gathers us like lambs
and leads us
home.

 Beautiful shepherd,
 hold us close.
Hold us
 safe.

THE SECOND READING

2 Peter 3:8-14

But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth.

O God,
for you a thousand years
are like a day.

Yet to us

one day can seem
a thousand
  years!

When
will you
  come again?

Please do not delay.
Touch our hearts.
Be our grace
every
single
 second.

Our
grace
and our
peace!
