Referring to one’s mother as “Woman” without further qualification is very unusual in Jesus’ cultural world. There is no parallel to this in either Hebrew or Greek literature.
Of course this holy Mother knew that the rebuke of her Son and Lord was not an insult born of anger, but that it contained a mysterious compassion.
