(Introductory Prayers)

THE GOSPEL
According to John, Chapter 4, Verses 5-42

“But whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Lord,

You are an everlasting spring
welling up in us
to eternal
life

When
you report to
a woman at the well
everything about her life,

we wonder.

You know
our ins and outs too:
when we sit and when we stand.

We yearn to worship you
in Spirit and truth,
but how often
we remain
dry.

Come, Lord Jesus, quench our thirst.

THE FIRST READING
Book of Exodus, Chapter 17, Verses 3-7

Strike the rock and water will flow from it for the people to drink.

They
wondered
if the Lord was with them
as they dragged through the desert dying of thirst.

God
was there
but they could not remember.

So too with us.

Sometimes it is so hard for us to find you
in the dry hours of our
lives.

Please,

be fresh water, pouring forth
from rocky days
to us.

Be that saving water
in Horeb
again.

THE SECOND READING
Letter of St. Paul to the Romans, Chapter 5, Verses 1-2, 5-8

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit,
pour God’s love,
like rain, into our hearts.
Make them your graceful gardens.

And let our thirsty leaves
open their faces
and drink.
