Responsorial Psalm: 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9

Focusing the Gospel

Key words and phrases: Jesus said to her . . . The Samaritan woman said to him, What you have said is true, woman . . . went into the town and said to the people

To the point: The conversation that unfolds in this gospel between Jesus and the Samaritan woman reveals what happens when we drink the life-giving water Jesus offers: we come face-to-face with the Savior of the world, we admit the truth of our own lives, we run to proclaim Jesus' presence and message to all who will hear. Encounter, truth, proclamation—this is the movement of our Lenten journey toward transformation and new life.

Connecting the Gospel

to the first reading: The water God provided the Israelites in the desert satisfied their bodily thirst. The living water Jesus gives satisfies our spiritual thirst. Both gifts reveal the presence of God in our very midst.

to to the catechumenal experience: The Samaritan woman's deepening understanding of who Jesus is and her coming to believe in him as the Savior of the world prefigures the catechumens' journey in coming to know Jesus, believe in him, and approach the living waters of baptism.
