Lord, give us strength to serve you.

(Introductory Prayers)

THE GOSPEL
Mark 16:15-20 (Ascension)

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

Jesus, let us take your gospel
into ourselves.

Let us write it on our hearts and minds
and across our foreheads
 as in times of old.

Then let us take your word to every living creature,
cast it into daylight and into dark of night,
from our housetops, pulpits and
town halls.

Everywhere.

In love, with love and through love,
let us work with
you.

THE FIRST READING
Acts 1:15-17, 20, 20-26 (7th Sunday)

“You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.”

Lord,
we waver,
like the apostles did.
We don’t know how to choose.

Teach
us to ask,
as the apostles did
 as they chose between
Barsabbas (Justus) and Matthias.

Let
your Spirit
show your Church
your way of choosing.

THE SECOND READING
1 John 4:11-16 (7th Sunday)

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.

Beloved God,
open the eyes of our souls.

Let our small eyes catch sight of—
not just the feel-good,
 kind of love—

but the lay-down-your life-
 give-up-everything
 kind.

Let us
follow you and
 love each other well.
