A Poem to Sit With
The Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary and Joseph

J. Janda

Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt,
and stay there until I tell you.

(Gospel)

The Flight into Egypt

How could
Joseph
who was nurtured

on cedar odors
the
ring of hammers
hitting
iron nails

who felt the
grain
of wood and
the
bite of the
saw
against wood

fashion a journey
which
had neither
the
sound nor feel
of

what he had known

J. Janda

J. Janda’s poems have appeared in newspapers, magazines, anthologies, and literary publications, as well as in books of his own poetry.
