Ideas for General Intercessions

These ideas are designed to be starting points for the prayers of a particular community of faith.

Joe Milner

For the Church: that we may commend our lives to God each day and be renewed in spirit by God’s faithful presence

For the grace of humility: that we may allow God to empty us of selfish desires and the need to control so that God can raise us to a fuller life

For the grace to accompany others: that like Simon, God will help us to enter the suffering in the lives of those around us and assist them with their burdens

For all who are preparing for the sacraments of initiation: that God will lead them through dying to old ways into New Life in Christ

For all who have been abandoned or accused unjustly: that they may know God's presence with them, have the strength to hold to the truth, and find support in the Christian community

For the leaders of government: that they recognize in Jesus, the King of the Jews, the model for leadership and follow the example of Jesus in serving those entrusted to their care

For all people of Good Will: that every heart may reject violence and force as ways to resolve conflicts, offer support to all who have been injured, and seek to advance reconciliation and healing in their society

For all who have failed to live up to their commitments: that they may recognize their failures and, like Peter, repent and begin anew

For the terminally ill and those who have been condemned to death: that they may have strength and hope in God’s mercy and compassion

For all who are grieving: that they may experience God’s presence with them and God’s abiding peace

For all who experience bigotry, violence, or discrimination: that God will heal their spirits, protect them from harm, and help them find new communities that offer support and acceptance

For all missing or runaway children: that God will watch over them, protect them from harm, and help to connect with someone who will care for them and love them

For all who are fleeing violence: that the Spirit will guide refugees, those fleeing domestic abuse, or neighborhood shootings to places of safety and help us to share our resources with them

For all who are suffering: that God will bring healing to the sick, courage to those facing their addictions, courage to those recovering from disasters, and strength to those caring for the sick

For peace: that God will clear a path to end violence and warfare in Ukraine, Gaza, and Haiti, open ways for dialogue to resolve conflicts between and within nations, and protect the vulnerable from harm
