Just from a practical standpoint, the multiple choices of readings for Pentecost can create a certain amount of chaos. I had one pastor whose answer to the “what readings” question was always the same: “Whatever’s in the book.” Which always had me muttering silently, “Fine, dude, but which one of what’s in the book, huh?” (Well, I hope it was silently.)
There are two choices for the Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 (many parts, one body) or Galatians 5:16-25 (the fruits of the Spirit).
There are also two choices for the Gospel reading: John 20:19-23(Jesus appears in the locked room), and John 15:26-27; 16:12-15 (the promise of the Spirit).
Lectors—and music directors—must be informed well in advance which selection will be read. Lectors need to practice, and music directors need to make effective, apposite music choices.
Experienced music directors, who have to plan music early, are usually the first to ask, “Which readings?” If the parish leadership views every question as a challenge, or is simply clueless, or just hasn’t thought that far ahead, one must ask the question very carefully, noting that lectors can do their job more effectively if they are not caught embarrassed by preparing the wrong readings, and that the music ministry would really, really appreciate appropriate guidance on the issue in order not to confuse the assembly. All rights reserved.
