THE GOSPEL
Passion according to John 18:1–19:42Behold the man.
In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God.
In tangled thorns he
emptied himself,
pouring out
grace on
all of
us.
Led to
slaughter,
bearing our torment,
wearing our guilt,
and crushed
for our
sins.
Behold
the
servant
of
God.
THE FIRST READING
Isaiah 52:13–53:13
When I strike the land of Egypt,
no destructive blow will come upon you.
Kings
are made
speechless.
Many nations startled.
Those who have not heard,
ponder.
Who can believe this?
Jesus,
we have all gone astray like sheep.
You take on the guilt of us all.
Your stripes heal us and
your punishment
makes us
whole.
We believe.
THE SECOND READING
Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:6-7
This is my body that is for you.
Our high priest cries out
in loud voice with
tears.
He walks with us and is
tested in every
way.
He knows our pain well,
and aches with
our sins.
Jesus,
we come to you
now
to reap
mercy after mercy
and grace after grace.
