THE GOSPEL
Passion according to John 18:1–19:42

Behold the man.

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God.
In tangled thorns he
emptied himself,
pouring out
grace on
all of
us.

Christ,
led to slaughter,
bearing our torments,
wearing our guilt,
and crushed
for our
sins.

Behold the
love of
God.

THE FIRST READING

Isaiah 52:13–53:13

Yet it was our infirmities that he bore,
our sufferings that he endured.

Kings
are now
speechless
and nations startled.
Those who have not heard,
ponder.

Who can understand?

Jesus,

We had all gone astray––like sheep.
You take on the guilt of us all.
Your stripes heal us and
your punishment
makes us
whole.

THE SECOND READING

Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:6-7

This is my body that is for you.

We have a high priest
able to enter our
weakness.

He cries out
in a soft voice
with tears.

Jesus, we
come to you now

to receive
mercy after mercy

and grace after grace.
